The b-Calm™ system began with the desire of Dr. Ken Budke, to better serve his growing number of patients. As a Dentist of 36 years, Dr. Budke built his practice on uncompromising service and value to the patient. The more than 300 patients that Dr. Budke sees per week are evidence of the success of these ideals. In the community, his practice was voted “Best of the Best” four out of the last five years from among the areas +100 dentists.

However, a continual complaint from patients troubled Dr. Budke. As he recalls, “My patients would routinely say; “Doc, if you could just do something about the sound of that drill!”, it was those comments that motivated me.” Dr. Budke went on to find no reasonable solution was available to dentists like himself, so he set out to develop something entirely new.

What ensued was a 3 year research effort to develop a practical solution. What Dr. Budke discovered was that typical active noise cancellation technology did not effectively control the complex, high frequency noise produced by the drill and other handpieces. However, it was possible to develop a blend of unique, optimized sounds that would disguise the noise rendering it unrecognizable by the human ear. What’s more, these sounds could be blended with very calming audio tracks from nature that naturally and easily promote patient relaxation and calmness. From this, b-Calm was born.

Immediately, highly fearful and stressed patients loved the b-Calm technology. Comments on the perception of shorter visits, less stress, and relief from handpiece noise were the central theme. In addition, a simple, hygienic design was employed to allow the technology to be effectively incorporated into the dental environment.

Today, b-Calm™ llc. exists to make this technology widely available as a practice management tool. It is hoped that dental professionals everywhere will be able to see the benefits that can be achieved with the b-Calm™ system. With such positive results, every office should have one!
